I love being asked questions about what and how and why I write stories. It’s the best way for me to articulate what I’m doing, because it’s not something I think about AT ALL. Really, I don’t. I never used to plan and even now find it very hard to do. I might collect multiple sets of notes on paper, in Word files, as comments and sometimes even on spreadsheets. Once the notes are written I almost never look at them, so their main purpose is to free up space in my imagination. When I know they’ve been recorded I can let go of them and get on with meandering down a different train of thought. Meanwhile I may be writing about something quite different.
So being asked questions is really interesting, just to find out for myself how I do it. Here are some I answered yesterday.
